ADF supporting Australia’s farmers
THE Australian De- fence Force continues to support emergency ser- vices with on the ground assistance to bushfire- affected communities.
This support will now extend to the essential task of livestock disposal in areas most severely af- fected.
Minister for Agriculture Bridget McKenzie and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds said it was im- portant stock disposal be- gan as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of con- tamination and disease, as well as to relieve a bur- den from the shoulders of farmers already stretched to capacity.
“The size of the task is still being assessed but we expect the vol- ume of stock losses to vary across fire-affected
regions and within re- gions,” Minister McKen- zie said.
“Unfortunately for some farms, they will have lost considerable numbers of sheep and cattle, while others will have fared better.
“The situation is likely to be beyond our local farmers and some local government areas who currently have their re- sources deployed to battle these devastating fires.
“Our farmers are also our volunteer firefighters – by day they’ve been protecting their homes and farms only to don the uniform and protect their community by night.
“Their efforts are heroic but they’re not superhu- man and they deserve our assistance after the days and weeks they have put
in fighting fires.
“The sooner we can dis-
pose of dead livestock, the sooner our farmers can begin the hard and long road to recovery.”
Minister Reynolds said ADF members were well placed to help with the task after their experienc- es in responding to the north Queensland floods.
“The loss of livestock is terrible and Defence is working with state au- thorities to bury the car- casses as quickly as pos- sible,” Senator Reynolds said.
“Like all emergency re-
sponse efforts, the prior- ity is providing support where the need is most critical, and where the ADF’s unique capabili- ties are best suited.
“The ADF is not here to take jobs away from local contractors.
“We will only step in when they’re not avail- able at the request of state authorities.”
Farmers who need as- sistance with assessing or disposing of livestock disposal should contact their relevant state agen- cy.
Low-cost aeration
PROCESSING efflu- ent and wastewater from piggeries can be simple and cost- effective, using Tsu- rumi’s self-aspirating aerators.
Introducing air into the mix promotes the aerobic processes that break down the waste naturally.
Available from Aus- sie Pumps, the Tsuru- mi-built aerators are called the TRN series.
Self-aspirating aera- tors are highly effi- cient, low-maintenance systems.
Installation and ser- vice of the equipment is straightforward and doesn’t require drain- age of the sewage tank.
Tsurumi pioneered the use and application of submersible aerators with livestock opera- tors in Japan.
The economical benefits, compared to conventional blowers or paddle wheel-style aeration equipment, have led to the systems being widely applied for sewage treatment.
Aussie Pumps prod- uct manager Albie Bester said, “We see that piggery producers and food processing plants all have waste- water handling issues.
“These aerators offer potentially huge sav- ings in installation and maintenance costs for these applications.”
The submersible aerators incorporate an integrated stainless
steel semi-open impel- ler.
The impeller draws air through the intake, mixes it with the liquid and discharges it at a high pressure.
This leads to highly efficient aeration with a number of signifi- cant advantages over conventional aeration means.
By matching the size of the aerator to the tank, it is possible to aerate tanks to 17m in diameter and 6m deep with a single unit.
For larger tanks, two or more aerators can be installed to provide the best results.
“These aerators as easy to install as a nor- mal submersible pump, and for maintenance they are simply pulled to the surface on a chain,” Bester said.
Tsurumi applies the same no-compromise design philosophy to these units as they do to their submersible pumps.
Anti-wicking cable entry, dual silicon car- bide mechanical seal encapsulated in an oil chamber, patented oil lifter and abrasion re- sistance materials are all part of the package.
