Aussie Pumps sludge pump solution
DESLUDGING effluent ponds without draining them first offers both time and cost savings for livestock producers.
Using submersible cut- ter pumps to dredge these pits means any fibrous material in the sludge is chopped as it is pumped, preventing clogs in the downstream pipework.
Tsurumi, the world’s largest manufacturer of submersible pumps, has developed a range of cut- ter pumps called the C Series.
These pumps are de- signed to chop any solids in the sludge with a cutter mechanism incorporated in the impeller.

has an impeller that can slice through sewage, food waste, plastic, rags and other materials in seconds.
“These exceptional pumps are capable of chopping their way through most items found in effluent ponds,” he said.
The large open-channel impeller has a sintered tungsten carbide alloy tip brazed on the impeller vane.
As the impeller rotates, the vane cuts against the serrated edge of the suc- tion cover, chopping fi- brous matter into small fragments that then pass through the pump.
The three-phase, heavy- duty pumps range from 50mm bore to 100mm.
The largest pump in the
range has an enormous capacity of 2750l/pm and a max head of 26m.
Like all Tsurumi sub- mersible pumps, the C Series include features that extend the life and enhance reliability of the pumps.
Significant design de- tails make a big differ- ence.
They include an anti- wicking cable entry that prevents water ingress into the motor if the cable is damaged or the open end is accidentally sub- merged.
A dual, double-silicone carbide mechanical seal is standard on all models.
All the seal surfaces are submerged in an oil chamber, away from the pumped liquid.
The oil bath features a patented ‘Oil Lifter’ that increases mechanical seal longevity.
The lifter ensures both the upper and lower seals are lubricated and cooled, even if the oil level in the chamber is low.
“There is a huge ragging issue in sewage treatment settling ponds and these pumps have been used to good effect in clearing the sludge from these,” Ben- nett said.
“The cutter pump sus- pended below a dredging platform allows desludg- ing of the ponds while they remain online.”
